Let’s talk brass. You know that moment a few weeks after your color appointment when your hair starts to feel a little warmer—or even flat-out brassy? Totally normal, but also totally preventable with the right care.
Here’s the quick science-y part: most natural hair color is one part blue, two parts red, and three parts yellow. When we lighten the hair, blue is the first to leave, which is why we’re left with those stubborn warm tones. This is where our gloss/toner comes to play by neutralizing these pigments to get us to your goal color. But unfortunately no color is actually permanent, so here’s 4 ways to keep that brass under control as long as possible!
1. Protect with Heat Care
Hot tools can be your color’s worst enemy. If your iron or dryer is too hot, it opens up the cuticle and pushes pigment right out—or even burns it off. Always use a heat protectant (yes, every time) and keep your tools under 360°. Your hair will thank you, and your color will last longer.
2. Stay Moisturized
Color loves moisture. Dry hair struggles to hold onto pigment, which means brass shows up faster. Build a simple moisture routine with a leave-in conditioner right out of the shower.
3. Use a Blue or Purple Shampoo (Sparingly!)
These shampoos are like mini at-home glosses. They deposit color on the surface of your hair to neutralize unwanted yellow or orange tones. But overuse can dry your hair out. Aim for once a week, and always follow up with conditioner to keep things hydrated.
4. Gloss Appointments
If your highlights are still growing out beautifully but your tone feels off, a gloss appointment can bring your color back to life without the full process. It’s quick, affordable, and can stretch your color for another 6–8 weeks.
Brass is normal, but it doesn’t have to take over your look. With a little heat protection, moisture, mindful use of purple shampoo, and the occasional gloss, you can keep your color looking fresh and bright all the way to your next appointment.
